To improve the operation of the national energy markets and the National Energy Customer Framework (NECF) the AEMC has agreed a number of memoranda of understanding with other organisations that are active within the energy sector.

Australian Energy Market Commission - Australian Energy Regulator - Australian Energy Market Operator

The Australian Energy Markets Commission (AEMC), the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) entered into a tri-partite Memoranda of Understanding on 7 June 2017. The MOU establishes a Market Bodies Forum which will contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of energy markets and regulation in the long term interests of consumers.

The Market Bodies Forum is underpinned by a Charter.

Australian Energy Market Commission - Australian Energy Regulator - Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Memorandum of Understanding

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 23 June 2014. This sets out agreed administrative arrangements and principles to promote effective cooperation, communication and coordination between the three agencies in the performance of their complementary roles in Australia's energy markets.

Australian Energy Market Commission - Australian Energy Regulator - Memorandum of Understanding

The Australian Energy Market Commission and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 8 February 2023. This set out agreed procedures to manage Trial Rules and enquiries received through the AER’s Innovation Enquiry Service.

Australian Energy Market Commission - Australian Energy Market Operator Memorandum of Understanding

The Australian Energy Market Commission and Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 25 August 2014. The MOU sets out administrative arrangements and principles to promote communication and coordination between the two bodies in the performance of their complementary roles in Australia’s energy markets.

Australian Energy Market Commission – Australian Renewable Energy Agency Memorandum of Understanding

The AEMC and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 16 January 2019 and then renewed this MOU on 5 October 2022. The MOU sets out a framework for coordination and information sharing to underpin a broad program of collaborative projects to facilitate innovation in Australia’s energy markets.

Australian Energy Market Commission - National Competition Council Memorandum of Understanding

The AEMC and the National Competition Council (NCC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 1 June 2007. This sets out administrative arrangements and principles to promote effective communication, cooperation and coordination in the performance of their respective roles in Australian energy markets.

National Energy Customer Framework

Following the commencement of the National Energy Customer Framework in some jurisdictions from 1 July 2012, the AEMC entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the following jurisdictional regulators to promote effective communication, cooperation and coordination between the organisations in the performance of their respective roles and functions in Australia’s energy services industries. The AEMC has also entered into Memorandum of Understanding with the following Energy and Water Ombudsmen.

The AEMC and the Essential Services Commission (ESC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 14 January 2013.

Australian Energy Market Commission - Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission

The AEMC and the Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission for the Australian Capital Territory (ICRC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 23 January 2013.

Australian Energy Market Commission - Tasmanian Economic Regulator

The AEMC and the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 5 April 2013 that was replaced with a Memorandum of Understanding entered into on 20 May 2021.

The AEMC and the Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on 28 January 2014.
