The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) today made rules to enable exempt sellers to participate in various east coast gas retail markets.
Under the final rule, the National Gas Rules will recognise exempt sellers under the National Energy Retail Law and enable them to be registered as either:
- self-contracting users, if they are selling gas to a related business
- retailers, if they are selling gas to an unrelated business.
The rule commences on 8 August 2019. This allows the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to make required amendments to its gas retail market procedures that are consistent with the new rules.
The AEMC carried out an expedited rule making process on the grounds that the rule change request was a request for a non-controversial rule.
