The Australian Energy Market Commission has extended the time for making a final rule for the simplifying terms in the National Electricity Rules because of the complexity of drafting the non-controversial changes.

The final rule and final determination for the Simplification of NER definitions rule has been extended by two weeks. The final rule will now be made on 26 November 2020.

This extension is necessary due to the complexity of drafting the final rule.

Although the changes are non-controversial and the policy issues are not complex, the length, detail, and complexities in drafting and reviewing the final rule has been greater than anticipated. The extension will allow rigorous legal review of the final rule.

The changes were requested by the Australian Energy Market Operator and by the Chair of the Energy Security Board, Dr Kerry Schott AO. Both requests stem from recommendations in the Finkel review.
