The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) will now publish the final determination and rule for the Operational security mechanism rule change by 27 July 2023.

The project will consider options to improve arrangements to support the management of system security as thermal plants exit and the transition to net zero continues.

The draft determination proposes an operational security mechanism - an operational tool to value, procure and schedule the delivery of security services.

An extension of time will allow the AEMC to consider the complexity of the issues raised by stakeholders in submissions in response the draft determination and rule.

The AEMC will continue its work on the critical reform with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), the technical working group and the wider energy sector.

The project remains an important priority for the AEMC and addresses the Energy Security Board’s (ESB) post 2025 Essential System Services recommendations for regulatory and market arrangements to support the stable and secure operation of the power system.
