The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) will initiate the rule change process for the Australian Energy Council’s (AEC) rule change relating to efficient provision of inertia in February 2023.

A consultation paper will be published, following the release of a joint AEMC and Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) paper in June 2022.

Feedback in response to the joint paper acknowledged the significant technical work required to understand system needs and sources of inertia in a rapidly transitioning system and that work is required to investigate options for enduring mechanisms.

Further information, including the expected timeframe for making a determination, will be announced at the time of the commencement of the rule change in February 2023.
