The Australian Energy Market Commission today hosted its third Connecting Policy and Research Forum, bringing together leading researchers and industry experts to examine future market frameworks for Australia's energy sector.
AEMC Chief Executive Benn Barr emphasised that researchers play a critical role in developing and exploring long-term visions for the energy sector.
"At the AEMC, we look to provide advice to policy makers and amend rules that deliver the best outcomes for consumers, both now and in the future.
"Through forums like this, we bring together researchers, industry and policy practitioners to discuss forward-looking questions about market design and frameworks,’’ Mr Barr said.
The forum examined how market frameworks may need to evolve alongside changing technologies and consumer needs, featuring presentations from distinguished speakers:
- Dr Gordon Leslie (Monash University) discussed bridging the gap between electrons and economics in the future National Electricity Market
- Dr Veronika Nemes (University of Melbourne) explored principles for integrating ancillary services in a high variable renewable energy world
- Professor Stefan Trück (Macquarie University) examined risk management and hedging strategies for retailers
- Dani Alexander (CEO, UNSW Energy Institute) presented on designing markets that allow for flexibility and options.
AEMC Commissioners Sally McMahon and Tim Jordan shared insights on market evolution and participated in panel discussions, along with Dr Neil Lessem, Head of Economics, who outlined key research questions shaping the AEMC's future work program.
"These forums are vital for bringing together diverse perspectives as we work to ensure market frameworks can adapt to change while continuing to serve the long-term interests of consumers," Mr Barr said.
The Connecting Policy and Research Forum is a core part of the AEMC's research program, which focuses on providing advice to policymakers and amending rules that deliver the best outcomes for consumers.
