The Australian Energy Market Commission is seeking feedback from consumer organisations on the nominations received for a new end use customer representative for the Reliability Panel. The Reliability Panel reviews and reports on the safety, security and reliability of the national electricity system and also sets a number of technical standards and guidelines.
The Panel is comprised of members who represent a range of participants in the national electricity market, including consumer groups, generators, network businesses, new technology, retailers and the AEMO. It is chaired by AEMC Commissioner Charles Popple.
In April 2020, the Commission invited organisations representing end-use customers to nominate candidates to the Panel. At the conclusion of that nomination process, eight nominations were received. The Commission has now asked relevant end-use consumer organisations to indicate their preferred candidate(s) by 14 May 2020. These organisations will shortly be contacted with more information about how to provide feedback.
This is the second and final stage of the appointment process for a new end use customer representative. Details on the previous stage of and background to this process can be found here.
In making the appointment, the Commission will consider the skills and expertise of the candidates and the requirements of clause 8.8.2 of the National Electricity Rules (NER). The Commission will take this feedback into account when it determines the new end-use customer Panel member, consistent with clause 8.8.2(d1). Clause 8.8.2 also includes the requirement that Panel members should be representative, both geographically and by reference to Registered Participants and participating jurisdictions, of people with direct interests in the reliability, safety and security of the supply of electricity.
