The AEMC is seeking stakeholder input on a rule change request to streamline the process to determine compensation for generators which are directed to provide certain non-energy services.

The rule change submitted by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)
relates to compensation following directions for services other than energy and market ancillary services in the National Electricity Rules (NER). ‘Other services’ may include, among other things, a direction for a battery to maintain a specified state of charge to maintain system security.

AEMO considers that the current two-step process to determine compensation for participants directed to provide other services is an unnecessary delay in finalising compensation. To improve administrative efficiency, AEMO propose a one-step process, where both components can be determined at the same time.

The consideration of this rule change request is part of a wider Commission work program updating frameworks for interventions in the NEM.

Submissions from stakeholders are requested by 16 July 2020.
