The SA distribution gas network is owned by Australian Gas Networks (AGN – formerly known as Envestra Limited) who outsources the operation of the network to the APA Group.
The SA distribution gas network covers Adelaide and its surrounds, and the regional centres of Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Port Pirie, Barossa Valley, Murray Bridge and Berri. It consists of approximately 8,322 km of pipeline delivering gas to around 450,000 customers.
The SA distribution gas network is connected to the MAPS, SEA Gas, South East and Riverland transmission pipelines.
The SA distribution gas network was subject to regulation as a covered pipeline under the Gas Code by ESCOSA (formerly SAIPAR).
Under the National Gas (South Australia) Regulations, the SA gas distribution network is classified as a ‘designated pipeline’ which means that the SA gas distribution network:
- remained under full regulation and could not be the subject of a light regulation determination (see sections 109 and 111 of the NGL prior to March 2023)
- is currently a scheme pipeline and cannot be the subject of a scheme pipeline revocation determination (see section 97(1) of the NGL).
