Following the receipt of submissions to the consultation paper for the Connection to dedicated connection assets rule change, the AEMC is now considering the features of a framework that could facilitate the sharing and better utilisation of dedicated connection assets (DCAs). Stakeholders are invited to provide input into these potential new arrangements for DCAs prior to the publication of the draft determination and draft rule on 20 August 2020. For this purpose the AEMC will be holding a webinar on 7 July 2020. The webinar will outline the direction being considered by the AEMC and will seek stakeholders’ views on a number of specific issues. Stakeholders are invited register their interest to attend the webinar below.

Workshop on updating the regulatory frameworks for distributor-led stand-alone power systems

The AEMC invites stakeholders to provide input into the proposed draft rules package for distributor-led stand-alone power systems.

A workshop will be held from 10.30am to 2.30pm at the Novotel Hotel in Brisbane CBD (registration from 10.00am).

The workshop is an opportunity for stakeholders to provide initial feedback on the proposed reforms. We will provide an overview of our package of proposed draft rule changes including service classification and planning arrangements, and the SAPS settlement model and price. In addition, the Australian Energy Regulator will present on the interaction between the Electricity Distribution Ring-fencing Guideline and the proposed draft rule changes, and discuss its explanatory note on ring-fencing.

The draft rule has a number of specific implications for retailers which will be the focus of this workshop. There will be a second workshop on 22 August 2019 that will discuss the draft determination and draft amending rule more generally.

This workshop will be held on 16 August 2019 in Sydney from 10am to 2:30pm. The venue is still to be confirmed. An agenda will be provided shortly.

The AEMC invites stakeholders to a workshop on 26 July 2019 in Sydney to gather views on its proposed regulatory sandbox toolkit to support proof-of-concept trials in the energy markets. The workshop will explore possible applications of the sandbox toolkit and how it fits in with existing tools.  

This input from stakeholders will help us design a regulatory sandbox toolkit that can promote innovation in the energy markets. 

A draft report on regulatory sandbox arrangements was published on 11 July 2019, which follows on from our interim advice in February.

The workshop will be held at the Pullman Sydney Hyde Park.

The AEMC invites stakeholders to provide input into proposed new arrangements for embedded networks. A workshop will be held from 10am-1pm on 8 May 2019 at Primus Hotel in Sydney (registration from 9:30am).

The AEMC is keen to gather industry, consumer and jurisdictional views on the:  

  • types of existing embedded networks that should be required to transition to the new framework
  • application of the framework, and 
  • process for transition.  

The proposed updated framework set out in the draft report, published on 31 January 2019, extends the coverage of national energy laws and rules to include most new embedded networks. These amendments will extend important consumer protections, and access to retail market competition, to customers in embedded networks.
