The NSW Gas Network (otherwise known as Jemena Gas Network (JGN)) is a distribution pipeline owned and operated by Jemena Gas Networks (NSW) Ltd.

The NSW Gas Network is connected to the Moomba Sydney Pipeline and the Eastern Gas Pipeline where gas is sourced from the Cooper Basin, Bowen/Surat Basins and Gippsland Basin respectively. The network services much of NSW, providing gas to over 1.5 million customers across 25,000 km of pipeline.

The NSW Gas Network was initially subject to regulation by IPART under the Gas Supply Act 1996 (NSW). IPART continued to regulate the pipeline under the Gas Code. It is now a covered pipeline subject to full regulation by the AER under the NGR.

Background

AGL owned and operated the network from when it was first established in Sydney in 1837. Singapore Power (a parent company of Jemena) purchased the NSW Gas Network from Alinta in 2007, who in turn had acquired the network in an asset swap with AGL in 2006.

The NSW network includes two transmission pipelines known as the Wilton to Newcastle trunk pipeline (the ‘northern trunk’) and the Wilton to Wollongong trunk pipeline (the ‘southern trunk’). These two trunk pipelines were reclassified by the NCC to be part of the NSW Gas Network in June 2009 for regulatory purposes.

Over time, the NSW gas network has expanded to include regional centres in the Central Tablelands, Central West, Southern Tablelands and Riverina areas as well as Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle.

The NSW Gas Network previously included the South West Slopes and Temora gas distribution networks in southern NSW. In 2003, these two networks had their coverage revoked after being sold to Country Energy. In 2010, Country Energy then sold these two networks (with other gas networks it owned) to Envestra (now Australian Gas Networks). See pipeline register entry for the Riverina Distribution Network.
