To fulfil its obligations under the National Electricity Rules and a standing terms of reference from the AEMC, the Panel assesses the performance of the power system in terms of reliability, security and safety.

The annual market performance review provides observations and commentary on the reliability, security and safety of the NEM. It compiles information collected from a number of sources including AEMO, AER, jurisdictional regulators and market participants. Among other things, the annual market performance review may assist governments, policy makers and market institutions to monitor the performance of the power system, and to identify the likely need for improvements to the various measures available for delivering reliability, security and safety.

The Panel is a specialist body within the AEMC and comprises industry and consumer representatives. It is responsible for monitoring, reviewing and reporting on reliability, security and safety on the national electricity system and advising the AEMC in respect of such matters.
