Energy is at the core of economic and social activity in industrialised countries. Efficiently functioning energy markets are therefore important to Australian living standards.
The Australian Energy Market Commission is responsible for developing Australia’s energy markets under national electricity and gas laws - bringing consistent decision making and regulation to the energy sector.
We have two main functions. We make and amend the national electricity, gas and energy retail rules, which are the statutory frameworks underpinning the function of the National Electricity Market (NEM), elements of natural gas markets and energy retail markets. We also conduct reviews and provide advice to governments on the development of the energy markets.
